Workshops and Courses

What are the workshops and courses?
They are group and individual production spaces where we hold art workshops and training/education courses, offering the tools necessary for developing and strengthening the abilities of those with intellectual disabilities. It is a collective process in which both the individual participant and the group achieve positive results in their character and personal abilities.

What is intellectual disability? If a person has an intellectual disability, are they disabled?
We don't think its right to define someone as "disabled" based on a single characteristic or feature. As people, we are more than that. We understand that people are who they are based on more than one characteristic. It has always been said that one is more than the sum of their parts. People cannot just be defined from a trait, characteristic, or attribute; this is what leads to discrimination, for example if you are black, Jewish, homosexual or disabled.
If we consider it necessary and fundamental to recognize that people with disabilities exist, we can start to recognize them as people with limitations. It is important to recognize our own limitations so that we are able to find and strengthen our own potential. Furthermore, this recognition is also important for the state to be aware of so that they can help enforce the fundamental rights and liberties of the people through the politics of social inclusion.

What is discrimination?

Discrimination is the distinction made towards people with disabilities. It is a practice that impedes or annuls the recognition, enjoyment, or exercise of fundamental human rights and liberties.

How do the workshops run?

The workshops and courses are coordinated by a teacher, an assistant and a chronicler (follow up writer). They are present at every session with the people that participate in the workshops. In general, the workshops have weekly meetings, where they try to achieve a group goal from what each participant has to contribute, create or wants to share. We work daily to create, produce, and work towards the development and strengthening of abilities and stop focusing on disabilities. This means working with what the participants know, working with their language abilities, their ideas, their values and their daily culture. The professors promote the creation of conditions that help the development of the participants of the courses and workshops.
We propose reaching them through art, training and education all the while respecting the time, possibilities and desire to grow. The objective of our actions is to transform the conditions of current life while improving the quality of life. Our job is to help our participants realize their potential to control their own lives and direct their lives towards what they want.

Who can participate?

Children, adolescents, young adults and adults who have the desire to create, learn and express themselves may participate.

What do I do if I want to participate in the workshops?

He or she who wishes to participate must request an interview with the area coordinator, calling Monday to Friday between 1:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. (5411) 4305-9191) or send an email to fundaciondiscar@fibertel.com.ar . Those who are interested should consult with a contact person who may be from the family or a professor.

For many years we have offered an space for the self-expression and the development of creative potential to young and adult people with mental disability. we always keep the firm conviction that this space works as an ideal framework, since theatre is the harmonic unification of various artistic expressions such as music, body language, oral literary expression and the full creative spectrum of the human being. because of that, in this space we aim for the full imagination exercise and the free individual manifestations, kept within the framework of a ludic context and with firm and clear guidelines. In this way, we have been able to discover significant achievements, some of them almost unbelievable. For that reason, we will continue with the present line of work, supporting the spontaneous manifestations, being with every young or adult person in the full development of his or her hidden potential, for them to get a more fluid and gratifying communication, and, of course, enjoying this fascinating ¨adventure¨.

Instrument construction and music work-shop

Introduction: The musical instrument construction work-shop proposes access to construction with simple tools of easy handle without the need of previous experience. We propose to reinvigorate the relationship between the artisan and the interpreter, through the means of instrument creation and a unique musical language. It is a group project where each member builds his/her own instrument. The materials used are low-cost and easily accessible and are of excellent quality, malleability and resistance. The completed instruments have the sound quality necessary for the students to enjoy the music they create. General Objectives: Enter the world of music through the construction of a percussion instrument. Appreciate the alternative form of instrument construction. Promote the formation of work groups with common goals. Recuperate the relationship between the artisan and the interpreter. Specific Objectives: Teach the process of percussion instrument construction with leather patches. Give incentive to creativity, responsibility and cooperation. Pass on rhythmic concepts through the cultural significance of instruments.

Theatre work-shop

Project for year 2007

This exploration space is, at the same time, a place for individual strengthening, where the results can be seen not only in the workshop but also in the daily life. What is reached in this place exceeds this time, it is beyond that, and makes possible the use of what was achieved in every new situation. Body recognition, noticing the other, communication possibilities, fantasies sharing liking, desires, ideas…., and more…., will be always the horizon, and we will be able to enjoy the enriching experiences for all!

Literature Workshop

It is a Workshop that has as mission to develop the communication through the oral and written language. In order to achieve this, we work essentially on three axes: The conversation and the oral interchange. We offer a space where the participants can share between themselves the most interesting social facts, the works carried out individually in their houses and all that its related to their interests. The interpretative reading and the analysis of literary or other works. We work with stories, poetries, TV programs, radio, advertising and riddles so as they can enjoy, value and learn from this works.

The creation of different oral or written productions. After having interacted with different plays they will be able to acquire specific abilities regarding the topic they are working on and, added to each participant's contribution they will allow to enrich the groupal production. We consider that the great effort carried out deserves to be read and shared by other people so that they can also value it. For this reason, we look for the way to achieve it.

Computing

We work thinking about the possibility that the using of computers offers as a tool that allows to estimulate, motivate, and propose different activities, and by this encourage the learning of various topics, such as the computers handling, mathematics, reading and writing and other topics related to day by day life. We work thinking about the importance of offering a space for groupal interchange and interaction, that will help to improve the integration of disabled people in different social spaces. For that we planify individual tasks and group tasks using that utility programmes and the special educative programmes depending on the different working areas. We work in a way that we can carry on the process through which each of the participants takes part. We believe important to highlight that this task creates an important personal autonomy and a stronger selfesteem.
